Blushing like a rose

March 8, 2010 by malsnano86

I just wandered over to Chicken Freak’s Obsessions, where I read that she’s looking for the right rose fragrance.  She lists the ones that she’s tried that weren’t quite right, and asks for suggestions.

People, I came up with twenty suggestions for her just out of my head, without resorting to any sort of list at all.  There are only two of them I haven’t tried yet, and I’ve (blush) got samples of them on hand…

And she’s looking for something other than Plain Rose or Fruity Rose, so I didn’t even suggest any from those categories.

So who would you say is the Rose Obsessed one?  Yep, that’d be me. (Blush.)

    Howdy, Mals–

There is only one true crusher rose scent for me (other than the dreamy rose/amber concoctions “Coco” and “Bois de Paradis”, which I’m mentioning just to upset you…) 😉

And that is Amouage “Lyric.” Don’t take my word for it, (which, given our opposite tastes, I know you won’t.) But gosh, that lovely red rose heart with a smoky, mysterious incense base. Too, too good. When you do smell it, lemme know what you think….

Sniffed Lyric last summer and HAD TO HAVE ME SOME. Luckily, there was a bottle split organized shortly thereafter, and I managed to nab 15ml. Love it love it. It’s one of those that’s stunningly beautiful, and yet feels like an old friend you hadn’t met before.

And rather mean of you to mention Coco AND BdP…

Just to fight back – Paris! (Don’t own any of the original, but I do have a bottle of one of the flankers, Pont des Amours. Which has CARNATION in it, mwah ha ha ha!)

        *Choke* ….gasp….

Aaaargh… now I’m lemming for both C&S Dark Rose and No. 88 again. Most of my roses tend to be fruity roses or balsam roses, but I love both of the C&S scents.

    • on March 8, 2010 at 8:04 PM malsnano86

Balsamic roses… those would be, what? Coco? Sikkim? I’m actually testing Sikkim this evening. It’s kind of nice – in the style of Stetson or something. I’m not digging it, but I’m not screaming and reaching for the soap, either.

I thought Dark Rose was perfectly nice, but I didn’t long for it. I really liked No. 88 better – but I WANTED to smell it on The CEO. (He said no. I’m working on him.) The rest of the C&S fragrances – meh. I should pass them on. A lot of them were pleasant citrus scents, and citrus just leaves me cold.

The list of my favorite rose scents is veeeeeery long.

ha ha – I love both Coco and Sikkim and I have Stetson, too. I actually liked most of the C&S scents except for one that smelled like cat pee – Citrus Paradisi. The only two that I really want are Dark Rose and No. 88 though – and if I had to choose one, it would be 88. And my CEO won’t wear it either – even after I told him that Ozzy Osbourne wears it.

    • on March 9, 2010 at 9:57 AM malsnano86

(Holy cow… wordpress ate my comment. ATE IT. Try #2)

I dated a guy who wore Stetson, no way I’m wearing that. And I did, actually, have to scrub Sikkim two hours in. Tolu. Sigh.

Yeah, I liked No. 88 far better than DR – and Ozzy wears that?? Innnnteresting. I’d have thought it was too romantic for him, perhaps he has hidden depths. (“You’re all a bunsh of bloo’y mazhishuns…”)

      • on March 9, 2010 at 11:29 AM CynthiaW

I believe that Ozzy Osbourne was once described of walking about in a cloud No. 88 – which might be way too much No. 88, but you never know. Another interviewer (Chelsea Handler?) also described him as her best-smelling interviewee ever. It is kind of a gothic scent, so I can easily imagine him liking it.

I can see not wearing something that an ex-boyfriend wore – or your dad or grandpa, which is my main objection to both Old Spice and English Leather. It’s way to creepy to have your husband wear the same scent as your grandpa. Conversely, I have no problem with spritzing myself with something that my grandma wore or with Back to Black, which reminds me of my grandpa’s pipe tobacco. So apparently, I have mixed up standards.

      • on March 9, 2010 at 4:01 PM malsnano86

My dad wore Old Spice, and my grandfather wore Royall Lyme. They smelled nice – but those scents are totally OUT for my personal use.

And my grandmother wore Avon Cotillion (ugh!) and my mother, No. 5. I’ve only recently worked around to No. 5 – I thought it smelled lovely, but “wasn’t me.” I was wrong. However, I still don’t wear it if I’m going to be seeing her.

Tabac Aurea bowled me over because it smelled so much like my high school boyfriend. Not *exactly*, of course, but very reminiscent (bar the patchouli). The first five times I wore it, I kept thinking of him. Now, thankfully, I don’t think of him at all. I’ve developed my own set of memories for it now.

Thank you for all of the recommendations, Mals. 🙂 I’m still listing and prioritizing and reading notes and reading reviews, and listing…

    • on March 10, 2010 at 8:39 AM malsnano86

This is sort of fun – I decided to compile a categorized list of rose scents and post it, so I’m actually working on that now and hope to have that up by the weekend.

What did you think of Silences? You said it was a NO, but I just wondered what element bothered you.

      • on March 10, 2010 at 3:27 PM ChickenFreak

I’m having trouble remembering what my issue was with Silences. I think it may have been a little too ‘scratchy’? Also, I was evaluating it as a green scent, not a rose scent, so it’s possible that it was too floral. 🙂 Smelled with a different goal in mind, it might be different.

      • on March 10, 2010 at 3:50 PM malsnano86

Ah… The angle does matter, doesn’t it? I typically find aromatic green scents way too assertive for me, while floral greens make my knees wobbly. When I tried Silences in the fall, I found it screechy, and I couldn’t smell the rose in it to save my life. This time around, it couldn’t have been clearer.

      • on March 13, 2010 at 12:04 AM ChickenFreak

Ohhh. Well, that’s interesting. I think that “screechy” was a big part of the problem. All the more reason to try it again.

I’m wearing PdRosine’s Rose d’Ete in honor of you and the cows. Our cows (well not ‘ours’ per se – the ones down the street) are standing about in the pouring rain.

Must go over to CF’s and see what you presented!

    xoA

Hi, Musette! Nice to see you pop in. Awww… thanks! I do love Rose d’Ete so much.

And our cows are standing about in the pouring rain as well… it doesn’t seem to bother them much. Not that cows have much expression on their faces, though.

My work may be wooden shoes, but it will be wearing those bright ribbons anyway.
